Salvador de Bahia has one of the most attractive coastal areas in the country, with crystal-clear waters that hide impressive coral reefs, fine sand beaches and extraordinary nature reserves where you can discover the rich biodiversity of Bahia. Among the large selection of beaches you will find urban ones with every comfort and infrastructure, hidden coasts in charming fishing villages and protected areas for ecotourism lovers, like Praia do Forte, which is home to a sea turtle reserve.
In Bay of All Saints is the sublime Porto da Barra, one of the few Brazilian beaches where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets, as it is facing west. In the shape of a half moon, its calm, clear waters are ideal for practicing water sports. Fans of scuba diving can explore the spectacular archeological remains of the sea floor, which came from the many battles and shipwrecks that took place on these coasts throughout history.
At the foot of the beautiful Farol da Barra is a beach famous for the natural pools formed when the tide is low. In turn, when the tide is high, the breeze and waves make it into the perfect place to surf. The promenade has benches to enjoy the view of the horizon, as well as a large space to walk, bike or skate. After a relaxing day at the beach, we recommend visiting the lighthouse and the Museo Náutico, which has a prized collection of underwater archeological findings, navigation instruments and a permanent exhibition on the culture of Bay of All Saints.
The most characteristic feature of Praia da Pituba is the long row of colorful fishing boats, which remind us of the recent past of Bay of All Saints. This beautiful beach, located 10 kilometers from the center of Salvador de Bahia, is the one preferred by surfers thanks to the quality of its waves. Also, on the long promenade that surrounds the beach there is a vibrant atmosphere morning to night with a large selection of restaurants, bars, theaters and souvenir shops.
About 20 kilometers north of the Pelourinho is Itapuã, a simple and lively fishing neighborhood that has kept itself separate from the hubbub of the center of Salvador de Bahia. On its calm beach you can have a relaxing day drinking coconut water under an umbrella, swimming in its refreshing turquoise waters or watching the horizon from the benches on the seaside promenade. The water is somewhat unique, as it has moments of waves perfect for water sports, like windsurfing, and other relaxed moments when small natural pools are formed on the rocks.
Strategically located 50 kilometers from Salvador de Bahia, in the area known as the Costa dos Coqueiros, (the coconut coast), Praia do Forte is one of the top destinations for ecological tourism lovers. Known as “Brazilian Polynesia,” this old fishing town blows visitors away with its 12 kilometers of fine white sand, where you can see dunes, coconut palms and natural pools. Diving fans can explore its coral reefs and observe tropical fish and other sea life. Another ecological point of interest is Projeto Tamar, a non-profit association whose objective is to protect the sea turtles and other species in danger of extinction. It has activities for learning about these curious marine beings.
Praia Piata is a beautiful urban beach perfect for the entire family, since it has excellent infrastructures along the entire promenade. Its relaxed waves are ideal for swimming or for the little ones to try a sport such as surfing, bodyboarding or paddle surfing. The rocky area, where small natural pools are formed, is perfect for discovering local animal species such as octopus and starfish. It also has playgrounds, lookouts and a wide culinary offering at bars, shacks and restaurants.
