With its incredible beaches and lively culture, Salvador de Bahia is the perfect getaway for travelers looking for a tropical destination that is relaxed and fun. However, like on any trip abroad, it is important to consider some details so your vacation in Brazil is a success.
Brazilian visa policy is based on the principle of reciprocity. This means that most of the countries that require Brazilian citizens to have a visa to enter them will also need a visa to travel to Brazil. According to current Brazilian immigration law (Law 13,445/2017), visa exemption is awarded by the Brazilian authorities reciprocally and through mutual agreement. Currently, Brazil has bilateral visa exemption agreements with approximately ninety countries. In the Consular Portal you can check to see if you need to process this document to travel to Brazil.
We recommend getting medical travel insurance with sufficient coverage in Brazil for the entire stay, especially if you are going to participate in extreme sports. The policy should include, among other benefits, hospitalization and surgery, and repatriation if necessary. It is also important that it covers theft or loss of belongings.
The health authorities do not require any vaccines to enter Brazil, unless you are traveling from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru or Venezuela, in which case the yellow fever vaccination certificate is requested. Keep in mind that if you are planning to travel to a another country in Latin America after your time in Bahia, you should check whether the authorities of that destination require you to be vaccinated against this disease. Beyond that, it is important to stay hydrated all day long, wear cool, comfortable clothing, and protect yourself from the sun.
The official currency is the Brazilian real (R$). Its value is published every day in newspapers and on specialized websites. In general, you can pay with a credit card and withdraw cash from ATMs easily. Money can be exchanged at banks, currency exchange offices, travel agencies and authorized hotels. However, for safety reasons, carrying large amounts of cash is not advised.
Brazil has four time zones, but Salvador de Bahia is in UTC/GMT-3. It is important that you check the time difference from your country to know exactly what time your flight arrives and what time it leaves, and synchronize watches and devices.
The official language of Bahia is Brazilian Portuguese, similar to European Portuguese. However, in tourist areas, most professionals speak English and Spanish. Don't forget to learn a simple Portuguese phrase. Not only is this a sign of respect; it will be very useful for getting around on your trip.
What you pack will depend greatly on the kind of activities you plan to do. That said, we recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. With regard to the Brazilian climate, in general it is very hot and humid during the day, so it is important to bring cool, comfortable clothing. Don’t forget to add adapters for your devices, if necessary. The plugs in Brazil are type N and work at 127 or 220 volts and 60 hertz.
