Menorca is known for the perfect condition of its coast. The island has incredible coves and beaches with striking contrasts. From the calm coves of the north, surrounded by steep cliffs, reddish sand and virgin scenery, to the vibrant beaches of the south, with fine white sand, crystal-clear waters and lively beachfront stands. The island is also a Biosphere Reserve, making its waters perfect for scuba diving, snorkeling or simply enjoying a quiet swim.
Cala Pregonda, located 10 kilometers from Es Mercadal, is between Platja de Binimel·là and Cap de s’Alairó. Though it is a popular summer destination, it remains pristine, and is considered one of the most beautiful on the north of the island. With calm, shallow waters, this beach is perfect for snorkeling, paddle surfing and kayaking. Getting there is somewhat difficult (on a dirt path), which makes access more challenging for people with reduced mobility.
Hidden by dense vegetation and thick Mediterranean pine forests, it emerges before your eyes after traveling for one hour along the Camí de Cavalls. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. No highways reach the beach directly, so it is a favorite fishing area for small boats and sailboats. However, if you decide to find your way there on foot, the scenery will make it worth it. It is also paradise for diving enthusiasts, since its warm and still waters are home to a wide variety of native flora and fauna.
The beaches of La Vall and Algaiarens, known as Es Bot and Es Tancats, are about 11 kilometers from Ciutadella. The area where they are located, the impressive Vall, is considered an Area of Special Protection for Birds by the European Union and a Natural Area of Special Interest by the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. This has made it possible to keep their waters in ideal condition for diving. There is easy highway access and they have restrooms and a lifeguard service.
Playa Capifort, also known as Cala Presili, is 17 kilometers from Mahon, at the end of the S’Albufera des Grau Nature Park. The most spectacular part of this beach is its large sanded area and its intensely turquoise clear waters. Because it is located in a protected area of incalculable ecological value, access by private vehicle is not permitted in the summer. There is a bus line between Mahon and Favaritx. Once you reach the destination, you will have to walk around 1 kilometer to reach the cove. Another option is to rent a boat or catamaran.
Cala Ses Fontanelles is a small and solitary cove located 11 kilometers from Ciutadella. It is part of an isolated estuary that also includes Cala Algaiarens, Codolar de Biniatram and Cova d’en Guárdia. Calm and family-friendly, it is ideal for relaxing under an umbrella or enjoying a refreshing swim while you admire the mountainous scenery of Vall. Though the last leg to get to the beach must be traveled on foot, it is easy to access.
With clear, shallow waters, Binigaus is the perfect beach to visit with children and enjoy activities like bodyboarding and surfing. At the south of the island, where the cliffs start out of the west, you can choose to settle in the middle of the beach, where there are more families, or in the hideaways and coves at the end, visited by young people and those seeking a place to practice nudism.
Playa Es Grau is a small bay at the south of Albufera des Grau, about 10 kilometers from Mahon. Off its coast rises the mighty Illa d’en Colom, 40 meters above sea level. Traditional fishing boats can still be found on its shores. This seascape is perfect for spending a day at the beach as a family practicing water sports. The beach has no services, but in the town of Es Grau you will find bars and restaurants where you can try out the local cuisine.
This is one of the most magical and popular corners of the island. Cala Macarella is a paradise you will not want to miss, despite the large number of people. If you are visiting between June and September, note that access is limited to the tour buses that make the journey, leaving from Ciutadella. Check the schedules and how often they run at your hotel.
A short distance from its older sister is Cala Macarelleta, more hidden and nudist. Its clear turquoise waters will make you feel like you are actually in a natural pool. Bus access restrictions from Ciutadella also apply in the summer months, so we recommend you reserve your tickets online in advance. While Macarella is more family-friendly, Macarelleta has a youthful, alternative vibe, ideal for enjoying a sophisticated and unique sunset.
Menorca is known not only for its small turquoise-water coves, but also for its white sand beaches that go on for kilometers. Playa Son Bau is the perfect place to go as a family, since the water is shallow and it is easy to access. Son Bou is also a perfect spot on the island to see the sunset.
