Partying in Santo Domingo

Make the most of your trip to Santo Domingo by going to the best bars and pubs

In this part of the Caribbean, dance is the intangible heritage and the joyful music invites you to move to the beat any time of day or night. In fact, every Friday and Saturday night on the staircase, next to the lit up palace of Alcázar de Colón, there is a complimentary folklore show, courtesy of the masterful National Folkloric Ballet of the Ministry of Tourism. Bachata, island’s soundtrack (a mixture of different Afro-Caribbean rhythms, such as son, bolero and merengue), is heard in terraces, cafes and balconies from the esplanade to the Colonial Neighborhood. Those who prefer more current sounds will find their place in the nightclubs of Santo Domingo, where you may hear pop, hip hop, techno, house music and reggaeton. Here is a list of the essential places to party in Santo Domingo.

Pubs on Hostos street and Isabel la Católica street

Hostos street and Isabel la Católica street, beyond echoes of the historical past, maintain the legacy of artists, intellectuals and poets. At its bars and restaurants you can get a taste of Dominican bohemianism with shows by singers, dancers and musicians, both renowned and newcomers. Some places also offer art exhibitions with pieces by local artists.

Jet Set

Jet Set Club, the most long-lived and lively club in the city, is the ideal setting to enjoy the best nighttime entertainment in Santo Domingo. This iconic dancehall was the springboard for many artists in the last fifty years. Merengue artists like Fernando Villalona, Eddy Herrera and Elvis Crespo, and bachata artists like Zacarías Ferreira and Anthony Santos, have performed on its stage. It is the perfect place to enjoy national rhythms on one of the best dance floors in the Caribbean.

Outdoor shows

At night, the Colonial City comes to life. Close to Plaza de España, on the staircase next to the lit-up palace of Alcázar de Colón every Friday and Saturday night (8-10), there is a complimentary folklore show, courtesy of the masterful National Folkloric Ballet of the Ministry of Tourism. For free on Sundays, you can also enjoy the Bonyé Group playing salsa, son and merengue live at the ruins of San Francisco, from 6-10 p.m.

Merengue Club

Just steps from Columbus Park and the Palacio Consistorial de Santo Domingo, in the middle of the Colonial Neighborhood, is one of the most emblematic establishments in the city for dancing merengue, bachata and salsa at night. With a team of extraordinary servers, live music and the most famous karaoke show in the city, when you go inside Merengue Club you won’t want to leave. See the events calendar to find out what shows are on each day of the week and choose your favorite.

Live music at Dominican Fiesta Hotel

Music and shows are an essential part of Dominican culture. Most major hotels offer a varied cultural program each night to bring local talent to their guests. In particular, the Dominican Fiesta Hotel stands out due to its live music from Thursday to Saturday, with jazz nights on Fridays in the exclusive Executive Lounge. Every night you may also enjoy a signature cocktail in the lobby bar, paired with live music by a pianist.
