Traveling to Riviera Maya is a unique experience where you can enjoy unforgettable moments. However, as with any trip abroad, it’s important to take into account some details so that your vacation in the Caribbean is successful.
If you travel to Mexico from the United States, you must present a valid US passport and the official document (FMM) issued by the National Immigration Institute. And if you go by car, remember to carry your current vehicle registration.
If you have European citizenship, it’s enough for you to carry a valid passport with you. Tourists from other countries may need a visa, so the best option is to go to the Mexican embassy or consult the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The maximum limit of stay in the country is 180 days.
Although it’s not mandatory to have travel insurance to visit Mexico, it’s important that you take out a policy that covers any services you may need in the event of an accident or illness. There are agencies offering travel packages that include this type of cover. Of course, don’t forget to have all your documentation in order, so you can be properly attended to.
The peso is the legal currency in Mexico, but you’ll see that on Riviera Maya all prices are also given in US dollars. Most establishments accept both cash payment and credit/debit cards (mainly Visa and Mastercard). However, we recommend you take a small amount of cash with you, because some traditional establishments only accept this means of payment.
Mexico has three time zones and the Yucatan Peninsula belongs to UTC zone 6. It’s important that you check the time difference with respect to your country, and also if you change your destination during your stay in Mexico.
Spanish is the official language in Mexico. Don't worry if you don’t speak Spanish. The vast majority of hospitality staff speak English. In certain rural areas, you can hear or see words written in Yucatec Maya, the local language. Don't forget to learn some simple Spanish phrase. Not only is this a sign of respect; it will be very useful for getting around on Riviera Maya.
The luggage you take will depend largely on the type of activities you’re going to do, but a swimsuit, a hat, sunglasses and comfortable shoes to explore natural spaces are all essential. Regarding the tropical climate, it’s generally very hot and humid during the day and cooler at night. You’ll also need adapters to connect or charge your electronic devices at 127 V. The plugs and outlets that you’ll find on Riviera Maya are types A and B.
